Surprise! Alberta Tories pick Alison Redford as leader and next premier

Alison Redford meets the press a little after 1:30 this morning at Edmonton's Northlands Centre. Below: Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach says farewell this morning.

Word didn't arrive until the wee hours of this morning, but Alberta's Progressive Conservatives astonished the pundits - and maybe even themselves - and chose former justice minister Alison Redford as their leader and the province's next premier.

You can read the details in the Globe or the National Post, or even the Edmonton Journal, if you take the parochial approach to these kinds of things.

But you'll have to wait until later today, here on Alberta Diary, to get the skinny on the inescapable conclusions that can be drawn from this remarkable change in Alberta's political landscape.

Is that Dave Rodney in the photo, beaming that he chose the right horse, and dreaming of a cabinet post?

Poor Dave C. How will you cope with the fact that the NDP's chance at forming a government in Alberta just became exponentially slimmer?

Soon you'll be the only neosoc left roaming the countryside, looking for someone you can redistribute their wealth for!
